Living a life of compassion towards self, others, animals, and the environment.
In addition to the curriculum of the Empowering Urban Youth program, students engage in outreach and service learning activities.

After spending multiple weeks learning about the issues facing other people, animals, and the environment, as part of the curriculum of the Empowering Urban Youth program, students are eager to help, and engage in the design and implementation of service learning projects. A project planning guide is provided, as well as sample project ideas, but the real power comes from allowing the students to express their creativity. The projects listed below are just a few examples of what students have created as part of the Empowering Urban Youth program. Other projects include brochures, websites, flyers, PSA’s, and t-shirt designs, as well as song lyrics, plays, and children’s books. A group of students even created a school-wide humane teen club called “The Walking Catfish” and this group has been recognized numerous times in local media publications and has received national recognition by earning the Humane Society of the United States’ 2008 Club of the Year award. For more information on this recognition see the links listed under “Thinking Globally, Acting Locally”.
