Featured Adoptable Pet of the Week - Holly

hollyI had the pleasure of escorting my amazing student volunteers to the Animal Friends Humane Society today.  We spent 2 hours at the shelter, walking dogs, and loving on dogs and cats.  One particular dog really touched my heart.  Her name is Holly.  Holly is a 1 1/2 year old Collie mix and she is extremely sweet and docile.  When I walked past her cage in the run of kennels, she just looked up at me with her big, brown eyes.  She is a beautiful gold color with white patches and her hair is soft and full.  As I stopped at her cage and peered inside, before I even got a chance to speak, her tail began to wag, ever so slightly, side to side.  Then, when I said her name, she continued to lay in her bed, but her tail almost propelled her forward as it wagged and wagged with excitement.  I opened the cage door and she did not rush to me, but instead, waited patiently for me to approach her.  When I was standing right next to her, I leaned down to pet her head and she immediately rolled over in her bed and showed me her belly.

That was it.  I was hooked.  I spent the rest of the afternoon with this sweet and gentle girl.  We went for a walk in the field, and then I sat next to her as she ate her food.  The workers were surprised and excited to see her eating.  See, Holly has kennel cough, a cough that dogs can pickup at shelters and it’s much like a human cold.  But, for animals like Holly that are in shelters with limited ventilation and lots of dogs in small areas, kennel cough can be tough to beat.  Holly is on medication to help her body fight off the kennel cough.  For her to eat, was a big step, and the workers thought it was because she was getting “lovin”.   If Holly finds her way to a loving home, her body will be able to clear itself of the cough.

Holly needs to find a foster home or permanent home so that she can get the chance that she needs and that she deserves.  Please look at her picture and if after reading this description of Holly you want to either foster her or adopt her, please contact the shelter at 513-867-5727 or send them an email at:  info@animalfriendshs.org or email me at contact@livehumanely.com.  To read more about her go to:  www.animalfriendshs.org and click on “Available Animals”.
